ASB Director Welcomes Families

Dear ASB Families
It is our pleasure to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to you as you begin the new school year 2016 - 2017 with us! We hope that everyone had a lovely and an enjoyable summer, and that you are now ready to venture into another school year. We begin our new school year with the mission to develop your child to his / her fullest academic potential.  Our teaching staff is committed to nurture and challenge your child, and our support staff is ready to provide a safe and caring environment for each individual who is part of our school community. We will do our best to ensure that your child finds him / herself comfortable, welcomed, respected, challenged appropriately, and most of all, loved in school.

The American School of Bangkok is extremely excited to inform you of our recent developments at both campuses.

Our newest certified and experienced faculty members have arrived from United States of America and Canada to give the best education to your child. We are happy to welcome our new Principal, Mr. Neil Walton and Asst. Principal, Ms. Annie Keep Barnes to Sukhumvit Campus. Both of our new administrators have been in continuous communication and working with the ASB Leadership Team in many academic-related areas, since the last school year, and are very excited to meet with parents and work with students and teachers.

New reading supplementary resources have been purchased from McGraw Hill. These are leveled reading texts for Grades 1-5 and will allow teachers to individualize reading instruction. In middle school, the College Board Pre-AP SpringBoard program will be implemented. The program will provide teachers with a customized pathway to rigorous instruction and performance-based assessments that will prepare students for AP courses.

In high school, we have increased our AP offers, and our counselors will continue to work closely with our high school students to develop a program of studies for them, assist these students in the process of meeting graduation requirements, and prepare them for their college and university levels. The AP Capstone Program is also being introduced. This program provides students with a framework to develop and practice their critical and creative thinking skills as they complete research connected to their lives.

During the summer, we have added new facilities and renovated current ones. At Sukhumvit campus, the school library has been expanded to include more activity-based areas and we have installed 25 new computers for research and usage.  Our basketball court has been completely renovated to meet international standards and can now accommodate a variety of sports. The old building opposite the basketball court was demolished during the summer, and a new facility has been built to accommodate additional office space and PE office and equipment and storage space. Over the next few weeks, we will add a green area in front of this new facility to enhance the natural look of our campus.  We have also added a new security guard house, along with an air-conditioned room for our drivers. The former office building located at the entrance of the campus is under construction and will turn into the Mindfulness Center of Asia and the ASB Performing and Fine Arts Building. Later this semester, our students will be able to enjoy new fine and performing arts facilities which include contemporary recording studios (for musical and television production), a studio for instrumental music, a modern dance/mini-theatre, an art gallery, and new classrooms for studying art and music.

At Green Valley campus, both of our computer labs have been completed renovated, and brand new computers have been installed. Students will now enjoy a new MAC Lab and a new PC Lab. A mini-theater system has been added to our drama room, and will provide students with additional opportunities to perform in a real theater setting. The swimming pools are undergoing major renovations, and they should be ready for use by September 2016. New swimming lanes and ropes will be added. Additional volleyball poles have been added to the sports annex near the pool. The ASB Residential Learning Center has undergone a complete make-over with the added bathrooms, new flooring, air-conditions, and furniture upgrade in the study areas. We hope that RLC students will find the newly renovated areas very comfortable.

We have contracted Dance Center, one of Thailand’s oldest and prestigious performing arts school, to train and provide our students a strong foundation in body movement, posture, and personality training. Dance Center will send their highly qualified dance teachers to teach Hip Hop to elementary students; contemporary / jazz to middle school; and dance performance to high school students.

At ASB, we believe that communication is the key to a successful educational experience. ASB is a ‘Google’ school. We have asked teachers to continue to integrate technology in their daily routine, and create classroom websites to enhance learning. We will continue to teach our upper elementary students to post assignments and develop their portfolios on-line. The school will also communicate and announce events to parents via parents’ personal emails and the school Google email account that will be given to your children. Please continue to keep your contact numbers and emails updated with our school registrars. Kindly also note that we have extended the day for Nursery and Kindergarten section. The school day will finish at 2:30 p.m. allowing students more contact time with teachers.

Our annual charitable fun-fair, the Sukhumvit Fair 2016, is back with a bang! The event will be held on Saturday, November 19th 2016 at ASB Sukhumvit Campus from 11:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. The theme of this year’s fair is ‘Hip Hop’. The event will feature an enticing international cuisine; spectacular performances by ASB students and teachers; fun children’s games and prizes; an exclusive shopping arena; cartoon mascots; hip hop dances, music and live band.  The net proceeds generated from this fair will be forwarded used to support AMCHAM Adopt-a-School Program, to help needy schools in Thailand in the construction of playgrounds, libraries, water tanks and water filtration systems, and other needed facilities for which government funds are limited. Please mark your calendar to attend this family fun-filled fair day!

ASB parents, please also continue to attend school events. Research clearly supports that when parents/guardians participate and are involved in their child’s education, there is a greater likelihood of academic success for the child.  So let's come together and make this academic year a memorable one. We look forward to meeting you in all school functions!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lakhana Tavedikul
Director of  The American School of Bangkok
