Music and Orchestra
Early Years: Students are introduced to music through singing, moving, and playing experiences. They learn about different kinds of music and the concepts of rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre. Students also have the opportunity to create their own music.
Elementary: Students learn to play instruments, read music, and sing. They also learn about music history and the lives of famous composers. Students have the opportunity to perform in school concerts and recitals.
Middle School: Students can choose to join the school orchestra or the school chorus. The orchestra is composed of students from beginner to intermediate level abilities. The chorus is a performance-based class that requires participation in school performances.
High School: Students in the High School Orchestra continue to develop their instrumental skills. They also learn about music theory and composition. Students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of settings, including school concerts, community events, and competitions.
Benefits
Here are some of the benefits of participating in the Music and Orchestra program at XCL ASB:
- Improved self-confidence: Music and orchestra can help students improve their self-confidence. When students perform in front of an audience, they learn to overcome their fears and take risks. This can lead to increased self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.
- Enhanced creativity: Music and orchestra can help students develop their creativity. When students play an instrument or sing, they are using their imaginations to create something new. This can help them to think outside the box and come up with new ideas.
- Improved academic performance: Studies have shown that students who participate in music and orchestra programs tend to have higher academic achievement than those who do not. This is likely due to the fact that music and orchestra can help students develop their critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and focus.
- Stronger social skills: Music and orchestra can help students develop stronger social skills. When students participate in group music activities, they learn to work together, communicate effectively, and resolve conflicts. This can help them to develop strong relationships with their peers and teachers.
Drama, Dance and Movement
Dance and movement is also offered from early years to middle school, and as an elective in the high school. Students explore the dance language through improvisation and creative movement games. Students are also exposed to different dance routines covering the concepts of space, time, body, effort, movement, and form.
In high school dance classes, students experience immersion in technique for ballet, modern, and jazz, as well as anatomical awareness that is pervasive throughout their lives. Classes are taught by the dance faculty, as well as by the various guests to the dance department. Students also receive the opportunity to be part of major school productions, working alongside technical and production crew, musicians and customers.
